Five Star Land & Cattle Company, California

For the love of beef: from pasture to cooking show

Summer grilling season is here, and we’re pleased to share we’re returning to the CBS weekend cooking show, Recipe Rehab, on Saturday, May 17 (check local listings). The episode features Mark and Abbie Nelson of 5-Star Land & Livestock, an Angus cattle ranch in Wilton, Calif. They’ll share the family’s traditional beef ribs recipe. We’ll share recipes on Friday, so stay tuned!

Meet the Nelsons

Abbie Nelson of 5 Star Land & Cattle Company, California

“I can’t imagine raising my family away from our cattle,” says Abbie Nelson. “Having the opportunity to be responsible for the care, the chores, the marketing — it teaches kids everything they need to know.”

Abbie is a fourth-generation Angus breeder at Five Star Land & Livestock in Wilton, Calif. Her great-grandfather, a cattle buyer who homesteaded in Iowa, was one of the first to import Angus cattle from Scotland in the 1800s. Today, Abbie and her husband, Mark, grow high-quality beef on the family’s central California pastures.

Nelson Family

Ranching and raising premium beef is a way of life for the Nelsons, and they hope their grandchildren continue to feel that deep-rooted connection to the land. Their love for green pastures and the wild blue yonder is especially evident at the Nelson family’s ranch in Oregon. There they have implemented environmental programs to ensure the property is preserved for future generations. They have restored 139 acres along the stream banks and planted more than 30,000 trees.

“I think it’s important that people understand farmers and ranchers are stewards of the land,” she says. In truth, land is our greatest commodity.

Whether Abbie is caring for the land, or the cattle that roam upon it, she says there’s a certain thrill each time she spots a food distribution truck with her favorite brand logo.

“I have always been an avid supporter of the Certified Angus Beef ® brand,” Abbie says. “We know how much it helps our business and improves the value of the cattle.”

The brand is also a mark of premium quality. Every steak, pound of ground beef, roast or fresh deli product bearing the Certified Angus Beef ® brand means you are assured of an exceptional eating experience every time you take a bite. That logo means beef has passed 10 additional specifications for quality. It’s truly the best of the best. And perhaps most importantly, it’s brought to the table by local farm and ranch families across the country — like the Nelsons of Five Star Land & Livestock. They are folks dedicated to putting the best beef available on dinner tables around the world.

Don’t miss the opportunity for a virtual visit to the ranch on Recipe Rehab this Saturday, May 17. Journey with us to California and explore the brand’s unique ranching roots (and a couple of amazing recipes, too!)

  1. So nice to see Northern California represented in the great wide world of Certified Angus Beef®. Rumor has it the CAB® beef back ribs prepared in the show we sourced through a proud CAB® licensed distributor in NorCal. Happy to be a contributor to the program.
