Going against the grain

Sandwich
[Editor’s note: This post was written by staff intern, Laura Conaway.]

Sandwiches … who says they can’t be exciting?

With so much emphasis on what I’ll call the “rare factor” among my generation, it’s hard to get by with something that’s just plain regular. Call it common, old-fashioned, even. Whether it is food, music or clothes, we all seem to be fighting against this force of regularity. We tend to stray away from something that’s not new and trendy. As a result, it’s easy for sandwiches to get left in the lunch bag, per se.

Sandwiches. The word doesn’t even sound cool! We’ve all heard it countless times. From mom packing our first PB&J for kindergarten to that leftover turkey wrap I brought to work today. Nothing special, right?

So maybe that’s why I like sandwiches.
They prove the stereotype wrong. And I’m all about doing that. There doesn’t seem to be a limit on them. And I like the idea of endless possibilities. Instead of searching for some new and improved method of cooking — or modern recipe I found online, I’m sticking with what has worked for generations. That’s right — I’m going back to the basics.

Because sometimes we had it right the first time we tried.

My favorite sandwiches include the Bacon, Steak and Tomato Sandwich (pictured above), and the Open Faced Roast Beef Sandwich, below:

This recipe is easy and requires very little preparation, but looks great on a serving tray for any type of get-together. Just add some mozzarella cheese, sprinkle with tomatoes and voilà!

And then there’s this “sandwich” recipe …

Grilled Pizza with Steak and Blue Cheese. It should be illegal. It has too much goodness in one place … steak AND pizza. What more could a person want?!

These are just a few of many recipes for absolutely delicious sandwiches. Click here for more sandwich recipes and tips from chefs.

Trends come and go. Ideas change. Some things stand the test of time. Give a sandwich a chance, because I guarantee it will be there tomorrow.

And the next day.

Happy eating!
